Vacation rentals where illegal parties are held now face license revocation

The Balearic government passed a decree law according to which vacation rentals where illegal commercial parties take place lose their rental license.

The background of the measure is the "trend" of such illegal parties in Ibiza, which has existed for many years and continues to grow. The decree is intended on the one hand to combat these illegal activities in Ibiza and on the other hand to prevent the "spillover" of this trend to the other Balearic Islands.

Authorities believe that owners of vacation rentals cannot ignore what is happening in their homes. The regional minister, Mercedes Garrido, explained that the apartment owners have a duty to monitor and compared the illegal parties to illegal constructions. These are also eventually sanctioned and fined. He added that this is how it must be with illegal parties, which are now a business model. Therefore, the ordinance provides for the imposition of mandatory sanctions as long as the owner does not comply with the demands of the administration.

The president of the Consell d'Eivissa (Ibiza Island Council), Vicent Marí, although also in favor of this measure, points out that the owners of the houses where these illegal parties take place cannot be held responsible for what happens in their homes in the short term.

However, the decree law ultimately provides for penalties of between 150,000 and 300,000 euros for the owner. In addition to these penalties, the tourist license will be revoked as a precautionary measure.

Moreover, the sanctions are directed not only against those who organize the illegal parties, but also against those who advertise them or carry out any kind of activity at them, such as DJs or caterers. The fines are graduated and range from 300 euros for the participants to 300,000 euros for the organizers and owners.

Both the Balearic government and the Consell insist that owners must control activities in their rental properties.
