Andratx, today an upmarket municipality with numerous luxury properties in the southwest of Mallorca, can look back on a long and fascinating history.
The name "Andratx" was first documented in writings in 1236, but the actual origin of the name remains unclear to this day. However, researchers Jaume Bover and Ramon Rossello discovered that a total of 25 different interpretations of the name existed between the 13th and 19th centuries, ranging from the Celtic name "Andraquis" to the Arabic word "indiraq".
In the Middle Ages, the island was threatened by North African pirates, which necessitated the construction of a defense system based on the erection of numerous towers. In the 16th century, a plan was drawn up to review the locations of existing towers and build new ones, of which 12 of the original 14 towers remain today. Monuments such as the harbor tower and the Castell de Son Orlandis in Port d'Andratx are still reminders of these stormy times and can be considered Andratx landmarks.

The CCA Andratx is an absolute must for all art lovers visiting Andratx on Mallorca. It is the largest contemporary art museum in Europe and exhibits excellent and high-caliber works by national and international artists. The stylish museum was founded in 2001 by Patricia and Jacob Asbaek and covers an astonishing 4000 m². This Andratx attraction not only hosts excellent art exhibitions, but also special concerts and other cultural events. Furthermore, the CCA Andratx offers itself as a platform for artists by providing studios for the production of art free of charge for a few weeks and presenting the finished works in an art exhibition.
The traditional Andratx architecture is reflected in the facade of the center and invites you to marvel at the magnificent surrounding garden.
The Ajuntament d'Andratx is one of our top Andratx sights. It is one of the most impressive town halls in Mallorca and is located in the former Son Mas castle. From the terrace, you can enjoy a wonderful view of the picturesque mountain landscape of Andratx.
In summer, the inner courtyard becomes a must-see Andratx attraction with fascinating classical concerts and cultural events.
For photography enthusiasts, we recommend a visit to the adjacent, outstanding castle garden, from where you can view the typical Andratx façade of the town hall. This amazing Andratx landmark also houses several offices, a police station and is used as a point of contact for travel information on Andratx sights.
The imposing, Gothic church of Santa Maria d'Andratx was founded in 1248 shortly after the conquest of Mallorca in 1229 and served as a refuge for the population from pirate attacks. It dominates the panorama of Andratx and offers a breathtaking view over the rooftops to the luxurious Puerto d'Andratx marina. In the past, when this Andratx landmark was still used as protection against attacks, the sparse, high windows served as embrasures. The pointed arches at the foot of the entrance steps to the church show the Gothic influence of the 13th century. This historic Andratx landmark houses magnificent altarpieces from the Baroque period inside.
Since 1970, the famous weekly market in Andratx has been held every Wednesday from 9 am to 2 pm below Santa Maria d'Andratx in Plaza Espanya and, in our opinion, is one of the most beautiful markets on the island. The market extends far into the town center and offers over 200 stalls, which are presented against an enchanting Mediterranean backdrop.
In the sunny morning hours, it remains shady under the large pergolas that are stretched over the individual stalls, so you can stroll through the alleyways in a relaxed manner and see the excellent variety of products for yourself. From fresh, regional food to stylish clothing, exquisite jewelry and fine bags, useful household goods, crockery and small electrical items, you will find everything your heart desires at the Andratx sightseeing attraction. There are also all sorts of curiosities to discover and you can also sample the culinary delights at many of the stalls.
The weekly market in Andratx is therefore a tempting oasis for culinary explorers and lovers of a sophisticated lifestyle. Here you will find a sumptuous selection of fresh fruit and vegetables that come directly from the surrounding area and promise the highest quality. Let yourself be captivated by the rich colors and tempting aromas of the local produce. A visit to this Andratx attraction is an unforgettable experience that will captivate your senses and immerse you in the local culture.
The Molí de Sa Planeta was built in 1784 and was an important part of agricultural production in Andratx at the time. The mill was mainly used to grind grain and was in operation until the 20th century. This unique Andratx landmark is an impressive example of traditional Mallorcan architecture and is considered by many to be an important cultural heritage of the island of Mallorca.
Just a 5-minute drive from the town center, the mill is perched on a hill and offers a breathtaking view of Andratx and the idyllic surroundings. The impressive building is characterized by massive stone walls and a striking, cylindrical tower. The mill can be seen from almost anywhere in Andratx and is an important landmark.
Sant Elm, a small fishing village on the coast of Andratx, impresses tourists and locals alike with its impressive backdrop of green mountains and crystal-clear sea. To get from Andratx to Sant Elm, you only have to drive 15 minutes along the winding road until the Tramuntana mountains finally flow into the Mediterranean. The peaceful location of the bay and the nearby island of Sa Dragonera were already appreciated by pirates around 500 years ago.
Nowadays, Sant Elm is a popular destination for families and beach lovers. The shallow sandy beach invites you to linger and numerous classy fish restaurants offer gourmets culinary delights. The unspoiled island of Sa Dragonera, which can be reached by boat, is particularly worth a visit. Another Andratx attraction is the Far Vell lighthouse, which dates back to the 16th century.
