On the Balearic Islands, there has been discussion about restricting property sales to non-residents in the future. Now the Spanish central government has put a stop to this.
Madrid is not prepared to prohibit the international movement of capital between members of the European Union. There is no legal basis for this, and at the same time non-residents would be discriminated against.
The Socialists and the left-wing parties had tried to restrict real estate sales in order to end the housing shortage on the islands.
