At the beginning of December, a majority of the Spanish parliament decided that in future pets will no longer be classified as objects before the legislature, but as family members. This also means that they will be treated differently from a legal point of view than before, for example in the case of divorce. Judges will then have to decide who will look after the pet and whether there should be visiting hours.
Around 40 percent of households in Spain have at least one pet. Until now, they were considered movable property before the law and could simply be transferred as chattel.
