Only insiders probably know what to make of the term "ikat", even if many already have it at home. And anyone strolling through a local market can't miss the unmistakable ikat.

Ikat - this is the true fabric of Mallorca, a weaving technique that found its way from the Orient to the island in the 16th century via the Silk Road. The "Roba de llengües", tongue fabrics, reflect the Mediterranean life, testify to freedom, nature and the sea. The resistant material - cotton and linen - is used as upholstery fabric, decoration and fashion.

Whether yellow, green or blue, the production of the high-quality fabric has a centuries-old tradition in Mallorca and is still made by hand. True ikat patterns are the same on both sides. The blurred colors that occur when discolored at the edges are reminiscent of a flame and each meter of fabric is unique.

"I'm pleased to see that the island's original patterns are now finding their way into avant-garde homes. The ikat in particular suits rustic interiors as well as classic and modern ones. The natural colors bring sun and Mediterranean lifestyle into the house," says interior designer Aina Rodriguez, who has been furnishing properties on Mallorca with her team for years. And the trend will continue, believes the interior design expert. Because eco is in; a sober and timeless style in demand. Entirely according to the traditions of the Mallorcans, whose houses have always been furnished simply, but with Mediterranean accents.

"People want to feel comfortable in their home, whether it's their primary or secondary residence. Everyone defines themselves differently, of course, and has their own preferences and needs. I take these on board and implement them in terms of sustainability and identity," is how Aina describes her work.

What does the dream property in Mallorca look like?
What are sun-seeking Central and Northern Europeans looking for? Mallorcan Aina Rodriguez has no answer to this question, because as different as tastes are, so too do needs change over the course of a lifetime. But all property owners on Mallorca have one thing in common, regardless of whether they are foreigners or locals: life takes place outdoors under the Mediterranean sun. Large terraces and gardens therefore need to be well and comfortably furnished. After all, they are the living room of the south.

And the ikat? A true Mallorcan, the woven fabric is extremely durable, versatile and feels at home as an upholstery and decorative fabric, even outdoors.
